On October 15 2004, the renowned Japanese TV series 3年B組金八先生 [3-nen B-gumi Kinpachi Sensei], starring Takeda Tetsuya as Junior High School teacher Sakamoto Kinpachi, went into it's 7th season. To commemorate and to celebrate one of the finest TV dramas of all time I uploaded all episodes of season 7 in the original RAW files (AVI) and a Chinese subtitled version (RealMedia). Sorry, no English subtitles.

Each episode comes with screencaps and a very brief description of the episode. If you don't want spoilers just scroll down to the download links.

For those unfamiliar with Kinpachi Sensei I also uploaded the 25th Anniversary Special which looks back at the 25 year history of the series, including clips of previous seasons which starred people like Nagano Hiroshi (V6), Ueto Aya, Kazama Shunsuke, Kamenashi Kazuya (KAT-TUN), Toshin Yoshikazu, and others.

Before you watch the series I recommend to also watch the 3B Students Introduction SP to get familiar with the latest generation of 3Bs which include Ya-Ya-yah members Yaotome Hikaru, Ayukawa Taiyo and Yabu Kota.

Episode 22 - Graduation

The title says it all. It's graduation time. Teachers and students urge Kinpachi to take back his resignation, but to no avail. Also, class 3B appeal to the court to temporarily release Shu from prison so that he can attend the graduation ceremony. The judge is about to make his decision on the morning of graduation day...

This final episode runs for a total of 144 minutes, so I decided to split the RAW into three individual AVI files and the Chinese subtitled version into two RealMedia files.

Episode 21

Kinpachi hands in his resignation. He will quit teaching at the end of the school year, but he doesn't tell his calss about it. Maiko still refuses to leave her room, blaming herself for Shu being in jail. Takashi writes a letter to Shu and has it delivered by Kinpachi who is finally granted permission to visit. Shu seems to be in good shape, but he's still suffering from occasional delusions. Meanwhile, class 3B start an anti-drug rally.

Episode 20

After the tragic events of last week everyone is in a state of shock. Kinpachi's colleagues have to defend him against a mob of angry parents while Shu spends his time in a police cell. 3B students have various ways of coping. While Shintaro wants to be alone others seek the comfort of the group. Maiko locks herself in her room. She's devastated because she blames herself for what happened to Shu. Kinpachi is going through a major crisis. He feels his powers running out and he seriously thinks about quitting his job as a teacher.

Episode 19

When Kinpachi Sensei tells his fellow teachers that Shu is a heroin addict some of them want to call the police right away. Others, including the principal, back up his wish to postpone that and to talk to the other 3B students about the whole drug issue first. Kinpachi returns to his class and leaves everyone with the choice of going home or supporting Shu and attending Kinpachi's lesson on drugs. Everybody stays. When Shu realizes that all this is about him he freaks out.

At one point Kinpachi recites a poem to Shu to calm him down. It's called Ikiru and was written by Tanikawa Shuntaro. Here it is, if you want to read along (sorry, I couldn't find a translation):

Takashi is back in school, and Shu has decided to take the High School entrance exam with him. But Shu is delusional. He hears voices and sees things that don't exist. Unable to cope he starts making a series of mistakes...

Episode 17

After flushing his heroin down the toilet Shu's mom ties him to his bed to help him detoxify. Meanwhile more 3B students take their high school entrance exams. Takashi is finally ready to leave hospital - in a wheelchair as his legs are still broken. When he visits Shu at school Takashi asks him to take the high school entrance exam together with him. Shu, who didn't plan on going to high school until now, says he'll have to think about it.

Episode 16

It's Valentine's Day, and it's also the time when Japanese 9th graders have to make up their minds as to whether they will go on to High School or start working after the end of the school year in March. While Yayo's mom thinks it would be better for Yayo not to go to High School (due to her mental condition), Yayo actually wants to go to High School. "Minna to issho" (everybody together) is what she keeps saying over and over, and she finds support in her classmates.

Takashi is still in hospital, but he's recovering fast. In a talk with Kinpachi he says that he doesn't know yet if he will go on to High School.

Meanwhile, Shu's mom has returned home from police custody, and she is now a completely different person. She cares lovingly for her son and promises to be a better mother than she has been until now. And being the caring mother that she is, she also recognizes the subtle signs that something is seriously wrong with Shu.

Episode 15

Shu is becoming more and more apathetic, and not even his obvious lack of appetite makes people think. His classmate Shintaro on the other hand has a very healthy appetite, but when his dad, a wealthy company owner, refuses to pay the fees for Shintaro's school lunch, the boy decides to go on a hunger strike. To support Shintaro his 3B classmates start a signature campaign and a rally to make Shintaro's father pay for his son's school lunch. When Maiko realises that Shu is the only one missing from the rally she goes to look for him at his house, and she makes a shocking discovery.

Episode 14

Shu's body is beginning to show the first signs of his drug abuse, signs that Kinpachi fails to recognize. Takashi is still in hospital, but he's recovering, and he can now have visitors. His first visitor, apart from his mother and his teacher, is Shu.

However, this episode focuses mainly on Shashou and his incapability of speaking freely without his microphone. Despite Kinpachi's efforts to prepare his students for their High School application interviews, Shashou doesn't manage to take the interview without using the mic. Also, he can't seem to tell his classmate Noriko that he likes her without amplifying his voice, which - needless to say - isn't exactly a turn on.

Episode 13

Most of this episode takes place in 3B's classrom where Kinpachi Sensei asks every single one of his students "Anata no yume wa nan desu ka?" - "What is your dream?" His compelling lecture is eventually interrupted by Endo Sensei who has news from the hospital where Takashi is still fighting for his life...

Episode 12

After his suicide attempt Takashi is in a coma at the local hospital. While Takashi's other classmates pray for him, Shu finds a way to numb his own pain. Sadly no one, not even his teacher who is looking after him while his mother is still in police custody, realises what is happening to Shu. Meanwhile, in their struggle to come to terms with Takashi's suicide attempt, some of 3B's students become somewhat short-tempered.

Episode 11

Koujirou (Yabu Kota) has a heartache. He's got a huge crush on a girl, but he's too shy to talk to her. Takashi discovers the shocking truth about Shu's situation at home. Shu makes him promise not to tell anyone. But Takashi does. Meanwhile, the Yakuza who are after Shu's dad finally find out where Shu lives, and they pay a visit. While Koujirou finds out that the girls he's in love with is about to have a sex change operation, Takashi has to deal with a different kind of problem. His dad is still being accused of drug trafficking, and the familiy has to move out of their luxury apartment. The only person Takashi can confide in is Shu, but Shu calls him a traitor for breaking his promise and doesn't want to see him anymore. So Takashi makes a fatal decision...

This episode has brief cameo appearances by Ueto Aya, Kato Shigeaki, and Masuda Takahisa, reprising their roles from season 6 of the series.

While Kinpachi Sensei has to deal with just about everything from vandalism to teenage sex, Shu picks another fight with Kotaro, this time in defense of Takashi who reprimanded Kotaro for bragging about drugs again.

Shu's story doesn't move forward a lot in this episode, but it will in Episode 11. So get your Kleenexes ready for next week's extra long (94min) special.

While the school is getting prepared to install a private principal to replace principal Senda, Takashi is worried about Shu. Shu is still at home recovering from his injuries, and he doesn't answer the phone. His classmates prepare a "get well soon" notebook and have it delievered to Shu by Kinpachi Sensei.

While the rest of class 3B take part in Yayo's torch run, Shu and Takashi spend the day together reviving their grade school friendship. In the evening, on his way home, the Yakuza finally get a hold of Shu. They take him away in their car, but luckily Shu's abduction is watched by his classmates Shintaro and Shasho. They get on their bikes and follow the Yakuza's car...

While some 3B students commit minor drug offenses, Takashi is confronted with the problem of drugs on a bigger scale. His dad, executive in a big company, is arrested because his company was involved in the smuggling of drugs. Takashi is devastated when he finds out that his dad was arrested and their apartment, even Takashi's own room, is searched by the police. But then he gets a phone call from a friend who won't let him go through this alone.

Principal Senda gets so worked up about it, and about the fact that he is soon supposed to be replaced by a private principal, that he suffers a mild heart attack and vice principal Kunii takes over. Kinpachi tries to motivate his class to do the Soran Bushi. And he does so by telling them they can't do it. They're a bunch of egoists who will never be able to accomplish anything as a group. And it's not because they don't want to. It's because they're afraid to fail. Considering this an insult to their honour, 3B try to get their act together. Their motivation is further fuled by the fact that Kinpachi threatened to quit his job if they fail.

For the upcoming school festival each class is required perform something. While class 3A will sing and class 3C will tap dance, class 3B are supposed to do the Soran Bushi, a traditional Japanese fishermen's dance. Needless to say, they are less than enthusiastic about the idea, and they also show a lack of respect for the dance gowns that are handed down to them by their 3B sempais.

Meanwhile, a couple of Yakuza are after Shu, and they mean business...

Episode 3

When a hearing-impaired student is bullied by two other boys, Shu - unlike his classmate Masayuki - doesn't make a big fuss about it. He confronts the culprits in private, takes their pictures with his keitai and threatens to report them if they ever do anything like that again. However, Shu doesn't always act so calmly. One day, when his classmate Kotaro brags about taking drugs (leaving out the fact that he peed his pants when he was passed out), Shu can't take it and starts a fight with the bigger boy.

While there are obvious signs that things aren't going well in Shu's life, almost nobody seems to notice, mainly because Shu acts very introverted and avoids contact with his classmates. Only Maiko worries about Shu, but she's too shy to ask him what's wrong. Lacking any close friends he could talk to, Shu seeks help calling the Childline.

25th Anniversary SP

On September 4 2004 TBS held a special 25th anniversary gala to commemorate 6 seasons of 3-nen B-Gumi Kinpachi Sensei, looking back at previous generations of 3B students and recapping the history of the series.
